TARTU, ESTONIA 🇪🇪: TARTU USPENSKI CATHEDRAL

Construction of the Tartu Uspenski Cathedral started by the order of Peter I after the Northern War and it was consecrated in 1783. The church was established on the foundation of the Dominican Convent Church. It was initially built in the shape of a cross and was given its quadrangular shape in 1840.
Interesting facts: – a chapel to St Isidor, who died as a martyr, was established in the church in the course of its extension; ‑ the Bolsheviks killed 19 innocent people in the cellar of Krediidikassa 80 years ago. Their victims, archpriests Bleive and Berzhanitski, are buried in Uspenski Church. https://www.visitestonia.com/en/tartu-uspenski-cathedral-of-the-estonian-apostolic-orthodox-church

Gediminas was the founder of Trakai and Vilnius, and one of the most famous rulers of ancient Lithuania. Gediminas lived from 1275 to 1341 and ruled the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for 25 years. He moved the capital of Lithuania from Trakai to Vilnius. He was best known as a diplomat who drew Europe’s attention to Lithuania. It was in Gediminas’ letters to Western Europe in 1323 that first mention the name of Vilnius. This date is now considered to mark the beginning of Vilnius. (govilnius)

DINANT, BELGIUM 🇧🇪: THE COLLÉGIALE NOTRE DAME DE DINANT

I love to experience solitude with historical icons.

I sat alone in The Collégiale Notre Dame de Dinant, a gorgeous 13th-century Gothic cathedral situated on the River Meuse, for a good 20 minutes without another soul around. I was able to meditate upon everything I’m grateful for, one of those things being moments like this, when I’m utterly alone, apart from the entire human race coexisting with some incredible piece of history in some random part of the world…it’s such a beautiful, weightless feeling.
