The Step Pyramid, arguably the world’s oldest pyramid…I wrote this in 2007: “The most important day of my life. I felt completely alone at this spot, as though no one in the entire world even existed. Something came over me that day, I remember being so perplexed because, here I was, in a city of 17million people alone never mind the rest of the world…and I was the ONLY ONE. I had gone out alone that day, with only a taxi driver. He dropped me off a ways from this place and I was the only person at this pyramid, which is lone standing far away from the main pyramids…not another single soul for miles…”
This pic always surprises people who haven’t been — how close the SPHINX and PYRAMIDS OF GIZA are to the center of CAIRO.

I was in Cairo to do my CELTA course (as a trainee.) And I came over from Okinawa. I remember Egypt being blurry and magical. I had just lost the love of my life, my Grandmother, Clara E. Gartrell on May 28, 2005…and a week later I was in Cairo, Egypt…the news of a recent suicide bombing at the Egyptian Museum had no impact on me because I was still in shock over the loss of her. The course itself was extra stressful for me because I was in mourning. It was a crazy time.
