SAMARKAND, UZBEKISTAN 🇺🇿: REGISTAN SQUARE

The Registan (Uzbek: Регистон, Registon) was the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand of the Timurid Empire. The name Rēgistan (ریگستان) means “sandy place” or “desert” in Persian.
The Registan was a public square, where people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis – and a place of public executions. It is framed by three madrasahs (Islamic schools) of distinctive Islamic architecture. The square was regarded as the hub of the Timurid Renaissance.
Reminds me of Ancient Rome.

SHAHRISABZ, UZBEKISTAN 🇺🇿: AK SARAY PALACE

Keep in mind, this used to be TWICE its height. Distance from Bukhara is about 280 kms. Timur’s enemies in Bukhara could see this palace from there and they would ride their horses towards it, thinking they were much closer than they were…when they weren’t able to reach it, his enemies were so furious that when they finally got there one day, they destroyed it by cutting it in half. Timur used to say “Those who doubt my power and munificence should look at my buildings.” So, his enemies literally cut him down to size…

Timur or Tamerlane (9 April 1336 – 17–19 February 1405) was a Turco-Mongol conqueror who founded the Timurid Empire in and around modern-day Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asia, becoming the first ruler of the Timurid dynasty. An undefeated commander, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest military leaders and tacticians in history, as well as one of the most brutal. (wiki)

TALLINN, ESTONIA HISTORY ABANDONED: THE HIPODROOM

The Hipodroom is a historic horse racing track located in the Kristiine district. It was established in 1923 and has been a popular venue for horse racing and other equestrian events ever since.

During the Soviet era, the Hipodroom was an important site for horse racing and other equestrian competitions, and it was extensively renovated in the 1970s to bring it up to modern standards. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union and Estonia’s subsequent independence, the Hipodroom fell into disrepair and was largely abandoned.

In the early 2000s, the Hipodroom was purchased by a private investor and was extensively renovated and modernized. However, as of this posting, it appears that it is now closed again for good, since December 2022.

This gas station “Point.S” was built in the 1970s during the Soviet era, and it served as a refueling station for military vehicles and equipment.
After Estonia regained its independence in 1991, the gas station was privatized and only continued to operate for a few more years. Point.S was forced to shut down in the early 2000s. Since then, the gas station has remained abandoned and has continued to exemplify Soviet architecture.

“This memorial, completed to mark the 100th birthday of beloved national author A. H. Tammsaare (1878-1940), is situated in Tammsaare park in central Tallinn. The writer is depicted in a pensive mood sitting on a bench. In choosing the location of the memorial, the authorities bore in mind that the New Market that once stood where the park is today was a favourite spot of the author’s, where he loved to observe people. The memorial was designed by sculptor Jaak Soans and architect Rein Luup.”

LAHORE, PAKISTAN 🇵🇰: MINAR-E-PAKISTAN 1947

Minar E Pakistan مینارِ پاکستان, “Tower of Pakistan” was built between 1960 and 1968 on the site where the All-India Muslim League passed the Lahore Resolution (which was later called the Pakistan Resolution) on 23 March 1940 – the first official call for a separate and independent homeland for the Muslims of British India, as espoused by the two-nation theory. The resolution eventually helped lead to the emergence of an independent Pakistani state in 1947.

The tower is located in the middle of an urban park, called the Greater Iqbal Park.

The tower reflects a blend of Mughal/Islamic and modern architecture.

The tower base is shaped like a flower. The area surrounding the monument is covered with parks and flowers. The location is often used for political and religious events. It is also known as the “Liberty Tower of Pakistan”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minar-e-Pakistan
