NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK STREET ART & GRAFFITI: “FREE COOPER UNION”

from freecooperunion.com:
With the start of the 2011-12 Academic year, Cooper Union’s new President Jamshed Bharucha announced that in the shadow of unmanageable deficits, the Cooper Union must place “tuition on the table,” and consider charging Cooper Union students to attend the school. For the past century Cooper Union has existed as a meritocracy: awarding a full scholarship to all students. Turning Cooper Union into a tuition based school is a profound departure from the established principles of the school and would completely alter the character of the institution.

The Free Cooper Union initiative represents the members of the Cooper Union community who wish to support the Cooper Union’s strong and unique identity as a tuition free undergraduate school for the study of architecture, art and engineering.

We alumni, students, faculty, charitable individuals and institutions pledge our full financial support to the Cooper Union as soon as the administration states publicly and unequivocally that Cooper Union’s undergraduate schools of architecture, art and engineering will remain completely tuition free.

The Cooper Union exists as a unique and revolutionary model of education and an ideal and example to institutions of higher learning the world over.

We believe in Peter Cooper’s original mission. We believe in sustaining this mission for all future generations. This mission is clearly expressed in Cooper Union’s mission statement:

“The College admits undergraduates solely on merit and awards full scholarships to all enrolled students.”

This piece started as Banksy’s “Concrete Confessional,” but has been re-appropriated by Cooper Union students. Speaking to whoever will listen…

BRONX, NEW YORK STREET ART: MY MONTH WITH BANKSY ~ “SHOE SHINE”

Here are some pics from two Bronx locations today.

From untappedcities.com:

For Day 16, Banksy has created a fiberglass replica of a sad Ronald McDonald having his shoes shined by a real person outside a McDonald’s in the South Bronx. According to Banksy’s website, “The sculpture will visit the sidewalk outside a different McDonalds every lunchtime for the next week.”

The accompanying audio guide says “Ronald [is] arguably the most sculpted figure in history after Christ” The sculpture is “a critique of the heavy labor required to sustain the polished image of mega-corporation…Does this era have feet of clay and a massively large footprint to boot?”

The narrator also notes that the face is actually of the Greek God Hermes.

from wiki:

In some myths Hermes is a trickster, and outwits other gods for his own satisfaction or the sake of humankind.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK STREET ART: MY MONTH WITH BANKSY ~ VILLAGE VOICE COVER

I just happened to have walked past two Village Voices on the street on Monday and picked them up. It’s two of the same cover. Here’s the story from highsnobiety.com:

The Village Voice ‘Banksy’ Issue – Banksy x Os Gemeos Cover Art

Local New York news magazine The Village Voice of course had to pick up on the current Banksy street exhibition “Better Out Than In.” Rather than simply reporting about the ongoing art exhibit and letting people know about the best tours to see all artworks, the magazine has produced a special ‘Banksy’ issue with a great cover and an in-depth interview with Banksy. The cover art was done by Banksy and Brazilian artists Os Gemeos. There are two covers and the two artworks seen on the covers will actually be rolled out later this month as part of the exhibition. Of course we do not know when yet. The magazine came out this week and as you can imagine is highly sought-after already on eBay, going for $20 USD and more.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK STREET ART: MY MONTH WITH BANKSY ~ “TWIN TOWERS FLOWER EXPLOSION”

Depicted below in my customary varied films perspective (Hipstamatic on iPAD) is the newest piece from Banksy, located on Staple Street in Tribeca. Here is a stencil of the Twin Towers with what appears to be a Dahlia sticking out of it. The dahlia seems to represent the first explosion on 09/11/01, plus flowers generally symbolize hope. From a website on flowers and meanings, it says this about the dahlia:

Dahlia’s are spicy flowers, and their meanings range from a sign of warning, to change, to travel, to even a portent of betrayal. The varied symbolic meanings of the dahlia make this flower a wild card.
