PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA 🇰🇭: GANDHI & PEEK-A-BOO

Advertisements

A monument to Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948), the leader of India’s nonviolent independence movement. It reflects the long cultural relationship between India and Cambodia—especially shared traditions connected to Hinduism and Buddhism.

The stone displays Gandhi’s famous “Seven Social Sins”:

  1. Politics without principle
  2. Wealth without work
  3. Pleasure without conscience
  4. Knowledge without character
  5. Commerce without morality
  6. Science without humanity
  7. Worship without sacrifice

The message is that progress becomes dangerous when it is separated from ethics and responsibility. Gandhi published this list in Young India in 1925, although he credited the ideas to an English clergyman Frederick Lewis Donaldson.

The bust portrays Gandhi late in life—thin, bare-shouldered and without grandeur—to emphasize simplicity, humility and moral strength. 2 October 1869–30 January 1948.
