KOBE, JAPAN: KANTEIBYO TEMPLE

In 1887, the overseas Chinese community living in Kobe, established Kanteibyo. It is dedicated to Guan Yu, a famous Chinese warrior from the Three Kingdoms Period. He is known to the Japanese as Kan-u. On 5 June 1945, Kanteibyo was destroyed by allied bombing in WWll. On 16 January 1977, it was destroyed by fire, and then again, in 1995, it was damaged by the Kobe earthquake. The last restoration was 14 February 1999.
