His story first presented to me on the Bogota Graffiti Tour led by Christian Peterson, http://bogotagraffiti.com/, I was intrigued to learn more. Above is a mural depicting in memoriam, Diego Felipe Becerra, a 16 year old grafitero gunned down in the prime of his life by police on August 19th, 2011.
I am guessing that the above scene represents Diego painting graffiti, the way he was found at Boyaca Avenue y 116th Street, when he was approached by police. Scared, he ran. Which would prove to be a fatal mistake. He was shot twice in the back by a policeman. Protests ensued when it was made public that the police lied and said that Diego fired at them first. There was such a huge public outcry against police corruption, that the policeman responsible was eventually sentenced and taken off the force.
Felix the Cat was one of Diego’s signature symbols. I don’t know if this is his actual mural or if this mural was created by his friends to honor him. I think the latter.
I don’t know how the above scene fits in, but welcome anyone to educate me.
Felix the cat!
R.I.P. Diego.
If there any inaccuracies in my story, I would appreciate corrections. Like I said, I first heard about it on the Bogota Graffiti Tour and then I set about researching news stories (mostly in Spanish) on the internet. I could very well have misappropriated some facts, so if anyone can shed some light, I will hastily apply corrections. Thank you.
