This house (circa 1835) was once home to Senator Joshua Hill. It is believed that he persuaded Sherman to spare Madison on his “March to the Sea.” Apparently, Hill went to West Point with Sherman’s brother, so due to that relationship, Sherman didn’t torch Madison.
The Presbyterian Church. Circa 1842. In 1866, Ellen Axson, the daughter of the church’s pastor, was married to President Woodrow Wilson. She was his first wife. This church was also believed to have tunnels linking it to other homes as part of the Underground Railroad.Originally one of the first public graded schools in the South. Romanesque Revival-style architecture. Circa 1895.
Supposedly, a tunnel was discovered linking this house to the Presbyterian Church, so it has been speculated that it may have been part of the Underground Railroad.
