NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK STREET ART: MY MONTH WITH BANKSY ~ “HEY BEAV! THE BEAVER…”

Turns out, yesterday’s site was just a little too dangerous and sketchy to be hanging around for any long period of time. I was going to go, but I kept getting reports from trusted sources that it would be a wasted trip. For the first time in Banksy’s NYC residency, there were actually two guys (not associated with him) that were covering the beaver with cardboard and making people pay to  snap pictures! From what I hear, in that neighborhood, you don’t argue with such an arrangement. I would have been furious, though, so it’s good that I didn’t go. Reports also came out that two guys unsuccessfully tried to hammer the beaver out of the wall, did some damage to it, but finally gave up when they realized they just didn’t have the proper tools. Here are three photos taken live on the scene by Jermaine Bell (can’t thank him enough!)

  1. i was wondering if you’d been able to see it. the gothamist article said: “The general feeling is that nobody cares about this neighborhood and now that they have something of value they should benefit.” having worked in the neighborhood, i have to say i understand.

    1. Yes! I saw that article and I think it has very valid points. The guys’ attitudes seemed to be that ordinarily no one cares about their neighborhood or comes around, but all of a sudden people are showing up to see a beaver on the wall…so let them pay for the privilege! haha
